FIFA 2010 World Cup Archive

The trophy’s in jubilant Spanish hands and the new World Cup Champions will be burning takkie in celebration for weeks, possibly months, to come. If there’s one thing the Spanish are good at it’s fiestas, oh and naps, and tapas and fighting bulls. Basically if it involves good times you can bet Spain know how to do it, just ask anyone whose been to Ibiza, if they can remember it. Where were we? aaah yes trophies. So Germany’s Thomas Mueller nabbed the Golden Boot award for his 5 World Cup goals and the Best Young Player award, Diego Forlan wins the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player and Iker Casillas secured the Golden Gloves for the tournament’s best goalkeeper. While FIFA has dished out its silverware there is still some contention about who gets the vote as the ladies’ favorite player. Bowl philosophy published the “What Women Want from the 2010 SWC” post less than 2 weeks ago, it has since received over 3,000 visitors and been the subject of some outspoken emails. Thanks to all of you of you who took the time to educate me about the finer points of your favorite male football stars.  Without [&hellip

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Final concludes with Spain as champions. Well done Espana! The writing was on the wall, and barring a hiccup against Switzerland, the 2008 European Champions delivered a flawless qualifying campaign and a clinical 2010 World Cup Final. The final itself proved a fairly scrappy affair, with bookings almost outnumbering highlights and missed chances going begging on both ends. The magnitude of the occasion weighing heavily on all 22 players taking the field in a match that would see the winner claim a maiden World Cup victory and the rank as the first European team to win outside the continent, and the first ever to claim the bragging rights to Africa, not to mention rise to the number 1 ranked team in world football

Was there ever any doubt?! except of course from my co-conspirator. I knew that that eight-tentacled freak wouldn’t let me down, and I’m flush as a result. Maverick…?. That’s right….thumbs up! See the problem with banking on history repeating itself is that, well, if you look hard enough you can find a pattern in almost anything. I’m more for the randomness of chance spliced with the gypsy skills of a psychic octopus, as illustrated below

What a game last night. Hup Hup Holland and no mistake. I did the fan walk with about 5 million other people and it was awesome. I don’t think I have seen that many Dutch people in one place since the great Amsterdam Cheese Fest of ’78. If you missed it, how is this for a goal from Van Brockhorst?!!!! Goal of the tournament nominee and a massive thumbs up from Maverick

Ok so to be honest my previous predictions were not very accurate but in my defense, anything can happen in knock out games. These games bring out the best and worst in teams. Teams forget how to score goals (Brazil), teams play with composure and skill (Netherlands and Germany), some forget how to defend (Argentina) and some downright cheat (Uruguay). Luis Suarez has not made many friends in South Africa at this world cup and his comments after the game will not help his cause: “The ‘Hand of God’ now belongs to me,” Suarez told reporters. “Mine is the real ‘Hand Of God’. I made the best save of the tournament. Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper so it was worth it”.  He then posed for this picture before continuing. “There was no alternative but for me to do that and when they missed the penalty I thought ‘It is a miracle and we are alive in the tournament’. “Now we are in the semi-finals although I was very sad because no-one likes to be sent off.” After this interview, he kicked a puppy, before going back to his hotel to feed on new born babies. Alas that [&hellip

It appears the earlier post regarding Paul the Octopus’s prediction is actually a hoax that seems to have gone viral on the interwebs, and like most things viral, Bowl Philosophy caught it but with prescribed rinsing and the proper medication we should be rid of the infection quick-sharp. Paul has not yet flexed his gypsy skills to determine the victor in the Germany vs Spain Semi Final, but when he does, we’ll be all over it like a rash…. apologies for the false alarm. [Tuesady 14h00 - Paul's officially chosen here] [Published at 11am today] Paul the Octopus (Paul the Octopus previously featured here) is back at work today, putting his “mad gypsy skills” to use again. Bad news for German fans though, the little cephalopod has picked Spain to win the semi-final encounter in Durban on Wednesday night. Hard to believe after this youthful German side annihilated Maradona’s Argentina 4-0 on the weekend, so far Paul has a 100% record from the 2010 Football World Cup, and the Germans are without their top scorer, Thomas Mueller, after he picked up a second yellow on Saturday. Spain played below par against Paraguay, though news of Paul’s prediction might reinvigorate this [&hellip
